Abstract:
These datasets consists of shapefiles representing selected contour intervals for the State of Arizona. Datasets are available for 50',100, 250', and 500' intervals. Each file covers an Arizona county or part of a county and as a collection covers the entire state. The data were created by processing hillshade TIF files derived from the U.S. Geological Survey National Elevation Dataset. The processing produced ESRI formatted coverages for each county or part of a county. The U.S. Geological Survey has developed a National Elevation Dataset (NED). The NED is a seamless mosaic of best-available elevation data. The 7.5-minute elevation data for the conterminous United States are the primary initial source data. In addition to the availability of complete 7.5-minute data, efficient processing methods were developed to filter production artifacts in the existing data, convert to the NAD83 datum, edge-match, and fill slivers of missing data at quadrangle seams. One of the effects of the NED processing steps is a much-improved base of elevation data for calculating slope and hydrologic derivatives. The specifications for the NED 1 arc second and 1/3 arc second data are - Geographic coordinate system, Horizontal datum of NAD83, except for AK which is NAD27, Vertical datum of NAVD88, except for AK which is NAVD29, Z units of meters.

The Data are created to serve as base information for use in GIS for a variety of planning and analysis purposes. These data do not represent a legal record. Geospatial elevation data are utilized by the scientific and resource management communities for global change research, hydrologic modeling, resource monitoring, mapping, and visualization applications.

The 1/3rd Arc Second National Elevation Datasets in ESRI GRID format obtained from USGS were projected from Geographic, decimal degrees, NAD83 to UTM meters, zone 12, NAD83-HARN using the ARC PROJECT GRID routine with the BILINEAR option. The output grids were resampled to a constant cell size of 10m using the ARC LATTICERESAMPLE routine. A clipping polygon was created using the COUNTY boundary. The output grids were clipped with this county polygon boundary using the ARC LATTICECLIP routine. In cases where two or more output grids intersected the clipping polygon, they were merged into a larger grid using the ARC LATTICEMERGE routine. In cases where the resulting size of the output county grid exceeded the software limits, it had to be subdivided into two or more sections. The ARC LATTICECONTOUR routine was run on the output grid to create the contour covers. A contour interval of 15.24 meters with a weed tolerance of 2 meters were chosen to make the 50 foot contours. A contour interval of 30.48 meters with a weed tolerance of 2 meters were chosen to make the 100 foot contours. The item METERS shows the elevation in meters. A second item named FEET was added to show the elevation in feet. The computation was based on the conversion factor FEET = METERS / 0.3048 A third item named INTERVAL was added to mark every 5th contour. The ARC RESELECT routine was used to create the 250 feet contours from the 50 feet contours. The ARC RESELECT routine was used to create the 500 feet contours from the 100 feet contours.
