In this overview tutorial you will learn how to use:
- The basic Zoom and Pan Tools.
- Show/Hide various data layers.
- Use the Identify Tool to view the attributes of your active data layer.
1. You have a set of 18 Tools to help you navigate, identify, and query your map.
2. The current Tool Mode is displayed in the lower left corner.
3. The Overview Map is shown on the top left corner.
4. The Main Map is displayed in the center.
5. The area below the Main Map is reserved for displaying Feature Attributes and Tool Menus.
6. The Data Layers are shown as a scrolling list on the right.
7. The green [Easy Search] button offers a menu to search for:
- Counties
- Townships
- Cities
- Towns
- Surface Parcels
- Sales Parcels
- ALRIS Tiles and USGS Quads
- Grazing Allotments
8. The [Help] button opens a list of 24 tutorials spanning 3 sections:
- Overview (1-2): Contains this basic tutorial plus a Tools List.
- Easy Search Tips (3-13): Contains tips on using the Easy Search Menu.
- Using the Tools (14-24): Includes step-by-step tutorials on using the advanced tools.

1. Click on the [Layer/Legend] button to display the Legend.
This button acts like a toggle between the Legend and Layer List.

1. The tool on the top left also toggles between the Legend and Layer List.
It duplicates the function of the [Layer/Legend] button.

1. The tool next to this toggles the Overview Map on or off.
Click once to hide the Overview Map.

1. Click once on the Zoom In Tool.
2. The Tool Mode will show that you are in Zoom In Mode.
3. Click once anywhere on the Main Map.

The map zooms in around the point you clicked.
1. The red rectangle in the Overview Map shows the extent of your zoomed area.
2. The North Arrow is displayed on the lower left corner of the map.
3. The green Scale Bar displays the distance in miles.

Each time you click, the map zooms in closer.
You can also zoom in by defining a zooming rectangle.
1. Click and drag a rectangle AB on your map.

The map zooms in closer to display the area defined by your rectangle AB.
1. The red rectangle in the Overview Map shows the area where you are zoomed in.
As you zoom in closer, this red rectangle shrinks smaller in size.
You also see more details as you enter the visibility threshold of various layers.

The can Pan across the map in any direction.
1. Click on the Pan Tool.
2. Verify that the tool mode changes to Pan.
3. Click and drag your mouse from point A to point B.
The map image will physically move along with your cursor.

The map moves to the right. You can see more of Sycamore Canyon.
1. The Back to Last Extent Tool gets you back to the previous view.

The Zoom Out Tool works in reverse of the Zoom In Tool.
1. Click on the Zoom Out Tool.
2. Verify that the Tool Mode changes to Zoom Out.
3. Click anywhere on the map.

The map zooms out centered around the point that you clicked on.
What if you wanted to zoom out all the way?
1. Click on the Zoom to Full Extent Tool.

The map zooms out to display the full extent of Arizona.
In this part of the tuturial you will learn how to identify a feature in a specific layer.
1. Click on the School of Deaf/Blind Surface Beneficiary Layer.
This makes this specific data layer active. It is highlighted in blue.
2. The display below the map reads:
School of Deaf/Blind is now the Active Layer
3. Click on the Zoom to Active Layer Tool.

The map zooms in to the extents of the School of Deaf/Blind Surface Beneficiary Parcels.
1. Check the box next to All Layers to turn them all on.

The map is drawn showing all the layers turned on. It looks congested.
1. Uncheck All Layers to turn off every layer.
You should see a blank display area.

1. Check the box next to School of Deaf/Blind.
2. You can now see the outlines of these parcels.
3. Click on the Zoom In Tool.
4. Make sure the Tool Mode changes to Zoom In.
5. Click and drag a tight rectangle AB across a cluster of parcels.

The map zooms in to display these parcels in solid yellow.
1. Click on the Identify Tool.
2. The Tool mode switches to Identify.
3. Click on a parcel.
4. The Attributes of the selected parcel are shown in the table below.

1. Turn on these 4 data layers:
- Towns and Cities
- PLSS Boundaries
- Federal Management Areas
- Hillshades

1. Turn on these two layers as well.
- Transportation.
- Hydrography.
Now you can examine your Surface Beneficiary Parcels in proper context.
What about the remaining surface parcels?

1. Turn on the Surface Parcels Layer.
All the State Trust Surface Parcels are drawn with a blue hatch.
The solid yellow parcels refer to the School of Deaf/Blind beneficiaries.

1. Click on the Surface Parcels layer to make this active.
2. The Active Layer is now Surface Parcels and is highlighted in blue.

1. Click on the Identify Tool.
2. Click on any Surface Parcel.
3. The Attributes of the selected parcel is displayed below the map.

1. Click on the Zoom to Full Extent Tool to view all of Arizona.

1. Press the green [Easy Search] button.

This opens up the Easy Search Popup Menu.
1. Press the [Zoom to Township] button.

The Easy Search Menu closes and the map zooms to your selected Township.
1. The selected Township is highlighted in pink.
2. The Attributes of the selected Township are displayed below.
3. The Active Layer is Township. This is highlighted in blue.
